Railway Book Publishers
The following is a list of worldwide book publishers who produce a wide range of railway books, which has been compiled by Daniel McIntyre.
There are alternatives to purchasing railway books direct from internet sites, you should also consider other methods such as ordering books from a local bookshop to support local businesses, or ordering through railway magazine publishers, or ordering through the bookshops or souvenir shops of a heritage or preserved railway, whether you are a member of one or not. Great Britain
- Connor and Butler
A British publisher, based in Colchester, Essex, South East England of railway books relating to railway history of lines and companies around London and the South East of England. It also publishes a quarterly railway magazine entitled The London Railway Record.
- David and Charles
A British publisher of lifestyle and art books, but within its range there are several railway titles, including history books on the old pre-British Railways railway companies - such as the Great Western Railway, the Midland Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway and others covering rural or country railways in Great Britain.
- Ian Allan Publishing
A major British publisher of books on transport related subjects, covering aircraft, buses, coaches, military vehicles, maritime and naval craft, railways. It also publishes a range of magazines, covering aircraft, buses, railways and tramways.
- Middleton Press
A publisher of railway, waterway, tramways, trolleybus, military and local history books. The wide variety of railway books include the “Branch Line Narrow Gauge” series covering narrow gauge railways in Great Britain and overseas. The “Country Railway Routes” and “Main Line” series cover the history of local railway lines in Great Britain. The “Tramway Classics” recalls the history of tramways in towns and cities around Great Britain. There are also various specialist transport books published.
- The Oakwood Press
This publishers produces a wide range of books covering the history of transport, including local and regional railway lines, tramways and buses in Great Britain. They also produce a range of videos and DVDs.
Germany
- Eisenbahn Kurier
This German publisher not only publishes its own monthly German railway magazine and a bi-monthly tramway magazine, but also a wide variety of railway books on various German railway subjects covering history, classes and types of locomotives and rolling stock, archive photo albums and a series of railway postcards.
- GeraMond
This German publisher produces a large range of transport books from cars to commerical vehicles, aircraft, motorbikes, to railways and tramways. It also produces several model railway books and a range of magazines covering railways, tramways, cars and aircraft.
- Transpress
This German publisher specialises in producing books on transport related subjects from cars to tramways, railways to aircraft. It also produces a range of DVDs and CDs on various transport topics.
- Verlag Kenning
This German publisher produces a wide range of books covering tramways and railways, their books are distinctive normally having a dark blue cover. This publisher is the German equivalent of The Oakwood Press in the United Kingdom, as a large number of the books produced cover local German tramway and railway line histories. Although the books are published in German language only, they are worth purchasing for the large amount of detail and research that they contain, e.g. tables, drawings, track plans and photographs. Books featuring a listing of preserved railways, either in German or Austria are also published periodically.
